The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has blocked the artificial intelligence software, ChatGPT, from accessing or utilizing its content. Various content providers including Getty Images and Reuters have also taken similar measures against the ChatGPT over copyright and privacy concerns. This major announcement was made by Rhodri Talfan Davies, the director of nations at the BBC.

Rhodri Talfan Davies informed that BBC is taking steps to protect the interests of its license fee payers as AI technology evolves. The BBC executive also highlighted the organization”s response to AI technology that he said represented a “significant opportunity”, at the same time a risk to broadcasters. “We have to ensure that the BBC’s content is protected and that it is not used in ways that we have not authorized or are not in the public interest,” Rhodri Talfan Davies said. BBC also stated that it was exploring the use of generative AI in journalism, but with vigilance and vision.

It is clear that BBC is focusing to create a more structured and sustainable approach to collaboration with technology companies. As the AI technology is in the developing stage, several content providers already raised concerns over the potential misuse of AI for malicious purposes, such as spreading misinformation and violating privacy. BBC”s latest move also indicates the growing concern over these issues. Organizations are now required to find a balance between unlocking the numerous capabilities of AI while ensuring the ways to protect the rights of content creators.
