The tech company Google has rolled out support for 110 global languages and added seven Indian languages to its translation service. Google now offers services to 243 languages worldwide, called the “largest expansion.” Tulu, Santali, Marwadi, Kokborok, Khasi, Bodo, and Awaddhi are the Indian languages and are now available on the translator.

Google Translate also includes Cantonese ( spoken exclusively in Southeast China) and Q’eqchi’ ( Mayan language in Mexico) and has been added to the translator which extends services to around 8% of the world’s population, The company also upgraded PaLM 2, its in-house LLM (Large Language Model) with new additions to the service which helps the translator comprehend variations and learn meticulously distinguishing closely related languages.

Some languages are almost the same as each other just as Hindi and Awadi and French languages like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole. PaLM 2 aids in efficiently translating these slang and other “speak alike” languages as it was developed by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. It is different from the Gemini Pro language model.

The new expansion of languages was based on Google’s initiative to touch 1000 languages which was announced in November 2022, the company aims to focus on developing AI models capable of translating the most spoken languages in the world which further adds up to new feather in the cap as they introduced new native languages to the list in this 1000 language journey.

The new linguistic additions also include African native languages such as Afar which is spoken in Ethiopia and would further contribute to integrity through language-promoting cultural diversity. It was emphasised in a blog post that the new language additions are based on the notion of spreading linguistic knowledge and making it accessible to everyone, especially for those who confront limitations with digital resources.

It is now heading to two decades of service, reaching more than 500 million people around the globe. Google stated that the company always consider even trivial elements like variations in spelling and dialects which help users to understand the difference between languages. These new additions roughly represent 614 million speakers catering to a tad of the world’s population.
