According to Downdetector, thousands of Instagram users experienced problems sending messages and accessing direct messages (DMs) on Tuesday around 5:14 p.m. Many users weren’t able to send or receive messages on Instagram. Over 2,000 people have reported this problem and users are taking to other social media platforms to express frustration and are checking if others are experiencing similar issues.

As per Downdetector data, problem reports are significantly higher than typical volumes. The chart below shows problem reports submitted in the past 24 hours.
Instagram’s parent company, Meta haven’t made an official statement about the issue. The cause of the problem is still unknown. Some social media users are taking this to X saying that they face issues while sending messages on Instagram. A user wrote on X: “Yes, Instagram is currently experiencing widespread outages, affecting many users who report issues with accessing their accounts, refreshing feeds, and loading content. This downtime appears to be affecting various regions, and many users have taken to social media platforms like Twitter to express their frustration and seek updates on the situation.”

Another frustrated Instagram user took to social media to share their experience, stating that they are unable to send messages through Direct Messages (DMs). Meanwhile, hilarious memes are circulating on Twitter and Facebook, poking fun at Instagram’s technical struggles. However, Facebook works fine and there are no issues reported so far.

This isn’t the first time Instagram has faced technical issues. Early in October, Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage affecting thousands in the US. Earlier this year, hundreds of thousands of users were impacted globally for over two hours.
