Instagram has introduced a new background editing tool that leverages generative AI technology. The new AI-powered editing tool on Instagram will allow users to change their backgrounds in Stories using prompts. This significant feature is currently available only for users in the United States.

“Our AI media editing tool backdrop is available on Instagram in the US!” wrote Meta’s lead for generative AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, on Threads. The new tool helps Instagram users to completely change the background of their images with just a few taps. When users select the background editor icon on an image, they will get pre-made prompts, such as “On a red carpet,” “Surrounded by puppies,” and “Being chased by dinosaurs.” Moreover, users will also be able to add their own prompts to customize the background.

Notably, once an Instagram user shares a Story with the help of new tool, other users can see a “Try it” sticker with the prompt. With this, others can tap on it and experience the latest image generation tool. This AI-powered background editing tool is expected to be available in other regions soon.

Meta is currently working to integrate generative AI technology into its various platforms. In September, the company announced that generative AI stickers would be coming to its messaging apps. This feature is powered by Meta”s foundational model for image generation, called Emu. It has the capacity to turn the prompts of users into multiple unique, high-quality stickers in seconds. Earlier, there were reports that Instagram was testing a feature called ‘AI friend’. This ‘AI friend’ feature allows Instagram users to customize an imaginary friend to their liking, and they would also be able to speak with this AI chatbot. However, the Meta-owned Instagram has not made any official comment regarding this feature.
