Japan has bid adiu to floppy disks as they were taken and in use until last month in government offices and buildings. The common people were ordered to submit forms and documents to the authorities using obsolete storage devices. Digital Minister Taro Kono said that these rules of using outdated storage methods have been scrapped and there will be no further use of floppy disks.

Mr Kono has been on a mission to trash floppy disks in 2021 and he declared his victory after three years of ‘war.’ He fought constantly to extirpate the old technology and tried to get rid of the fax machine since he started working at his designation. When each country was in the global race to develop digital technologies, Japan lagged and jinxed at the transformation due to its deep resistance and negligence to change.

A floppy disk is composed of a thin and flexible storage medium encased in a rectangular plastic carrier. With the floppy disk drive (FDD) it will write the information, get inputs and use it for primary data storage as well as a backup, transferring data between systems. It was used as a popular medium for nearly 4o years but declined after the emergence of digital technology in the world. After 2000, floppy disks were found rare with the invention of USB flash drives and memory cards.
