Skype To Retire In May 2025: What You Need To Know

Skype will officially be retired in May 2025, bringing an end to over two decades of service for millions of users around the world, according to Microsoft.

While the change will affect both free and paid Skype users, it will not impact Skype for Business, which will continue to operate as usual.

Here’s everything you need to know about this upcoming transition and what options are available for users moving forward:

Skype users will be given the opportunity to migrate to Microsoft Teams Free, a platform that offers many of the same core features of Skype, along with a host of additional capabilities.

By logging into Microsoft Teams Free using your Skype account credentials, your existing chats and contacts will automatically sync, allowing you to pick up conversations right where you left off.

This transition will be rolled out gradually, starting with those who are already part of the Skype and Teams Insider programs and are using the latest versions of the apps.

For those who are not interested in switching to Microsoft Teams Free, Skype users will have the option to export their data.

This allows users to save their messages, contacts, and other information before the service shuts down in May 2025.

If you have a current paid Skype subscription, including Skype Numbers or calling services, you will be able to continue using these features until April 3, 2025, with automatic renewals in place until then.

However, after May 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will be available only to the remaining paid users, and it will be accessible through the Skype web portal and within Microsoft Teams Free.

In addition to these changes, Skype will stop offering paid features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions that allow for international and domestic calls.

As part of this shift, users who have Skype Numbers will need to contact their new carrier to transfer the number. More detailed instructions on how to do this can be found on Skype’s support page.

Microsoft designed Skype to help customers connect with the people who matter most, whether for personal or professional purposes.

It’s widely used for both one-on-one chats and group conversations, and works seamlessly across mobile devices, PCs, and even Alexa. Skype’s messaging, HD voice, and video calling features allow you to share moments and collaborate with others no matter where you are.
