Tech giant Apple has launched its new iPhone 15 and a significant change is making headlines that it has replaced the Lightning charger with USB-C chargers.
The decision has come less than a year after the European Union voted to approve legislation to require smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, portable speakers and other small devices to support USB-C charging by 2024.
With the new choice, first-of-its-kind, the iPhone users are allowed to mix and match their device and chargers even if they are produced by different manufacturers. They don”t need to search long for an iPhone charger when they are away from home as they can borrow one from other non-Apple users.
Users will now be able to use a single charging cable for several Apple devices like iPhones, Macs and iPads.
The shift would also reportedly bring breakthrough data transfer speed in new high-end iPhone models.
The change is significant as the American multinational tech company is now adopting the universal charging standard.
Currently Apple uses Lightning chargers for their iPhones, created and designed by Apple Inc. It was introduced on September 12, 2012, in conjunction with the iPhone 5, to replace its predecessor, the 30-pin dock connector.
Lightning functions same as the USB-C, facilitating fast charging and has a reversible design. Such chargers are not applicable to Android smart phones or tablet since it is a proprietary technology by Apple that can only be used to charge iPhones and older iPads.
But the company has already switched its iPads and MacBooks to USB-C charging and remained resistant to incorporate the change on their iPhone.
“This is arguably the biggest disruption to iPhone design for several years, but in reality, it is hardly a dramatic move,” CNN quoted analyst Ben Wood.
