YouTube has announced a new policy to tackle “egregious clickbait” titles and thumbnails on its platform, particularly for videos related to breaking news or current events.

This move is said to prevent users from feeling deceived or misled by sensationalised titles and thumbnails. According to YouTube, “egregious clickbait” occurs when a video’s title or thumbnail makes promises or claims that are not delivered within the video itself.

YouTube said that this can be particularly problematic when it comes to breaking news or current events where users are seeking accurate and reliable information. To address this issue, YouTube will be taking down content that violates this policy and users will be given time to adjust to the changes.

The new policy will focus on videos that cover topics related to breaking news or current events. This means that titles and thumbnails that are designed to bait users into clicking on a video, such as “The President Resigned,”  “Top Political News,” and “Trending Political Discussions” will no longer be allowed.

YouTube has not yet clarified what it defines as videos covering breaking news or current events or how it plans to identify content with egregious clickbait.

Additionally, the platform has not outlined what steps users can take to appeal the takedown of their content and have it restored. However, YouTube has stated that it will not issue a strike against a channel for violating this policy, in order to give users time to adjust to the changes.
