The history of the Souq can be traced back to 1901, to the beginning of modern Saudi Arabia. It exemplifies a real image of the Saudi heritage. The word ‘zal’ means ‘carpet’ or ‘floor rug’, hence, its name roughly translates to “rug market,” referring to the patterned textiles peculiar to Middle Eastern imagery. Besides textiles, the market is an all-stop location featuring an abundance of crafts: ceremonial swords, antiquities, shoes, spices, and oriental perfumes.

Since the shopping centre is emblematic of authenticity, with the colors, scents, and flavors it have defined Arabic culture all through these years. Along with the largest complex of shops, it also locates a separate auction space solely dedicated for old goods sales.
