The historic battle, fought between Muslims and pagan Arabs, took place. The Meccans were seeking revenge for the battle of Badr, in which a relatively smaller Muslim force defeated the rivals. Uhud was largely a defensive war for Muslims.

However, while the Muslims were on the verge of another decisive victory as the war crossed halfway, a breach of Prophet Muhammed’s order by an army post, leaving their assigned region, thinking the Muslims won the battle, gave an opportunity for the rival to conduct a surprise attack from another side of the mountain. The attack caused huge damage to the Islamic force, with several getting martyred, forcing the Islamic force to withdraw from the mountain. The rivals then went back, declaring their victory.
