With the government revising the toll rates for vehicles using the Atal Setu, Mumbai Trans Train Harbour Link (MTHL), social media have been flooded with users commenting on the huge surge in the revised toll rates for newly inaugurated bridge users. Atal Setu, hailed as India’s longest sea bridge, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (January, 12). The 22-kilometre and six-lane bridge is expected to reduce the travel time significantly between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Sharing the newly revised toll rate board, a user, Supriya Shrinate, took to X and commented on what else can be expected from a government of the rich.  She also noted that the monthly pass for bus and car will be Rs 12,500, which will be Rs 1.5 lakhs every year, and for the truck, while the monthly pass will be Rs 41,500, it has to pay an annual pass of Rs 4.98 lakhs. Sarcastically, she urged the people to enjoy the sea bridge journey and not to forget to thank Prime Minister Modi.

Another user and journalist, Pankaj Pachauri, took a jibe at the revised toll rate advising the people to “drive carefully,” and pointed out that while India’s per capita annual gross net income is Rs 113395, Atal Setu bridge pass will be Rs 150000 annually, indicating that one has to spend more than his annual income for the bridge pass toll for a year.

Another user, the Mauryan, said that It seems that this bridge is not built for the common people because its toll rates are more than the earnings of the whole month. Another user opined that the bridge is for the privileged people and not for the common man.

However, many have also come to the fore in support of the revised toll rate defending the government and saying that how can the people who cannot afford a car take it to the bridge?

An X user, Dr Rajesh Patil, said that If your annual income is 1 lakh why would you take a car 3-4 times a day over a 22 km bridge for one full year? Another user, justifying the toll hike, suggested people to either use the Atal Setu bridge or take the alternate route and travel 2 hours extra with 1000 Rupees extra fuel.

“Justification given for high toll rates for new infrastructure development: take public transport; poor people don”t have cars; It saves time, go vote for congress,” an X user, Minty Sharma commented on the justifications for the revised toll rate
