Darkness engulfed Kolkata at midday on Friday as heavy rain and thunderstorms struck the city. During peak hours, traffic congestion left commuters stranded in various parts of the metropolis.
The Met Office reported that a low-pressure system over north Bengal, coupled with an active monsoon, would bring heavy rainfall across West Bengal until 26 August. South Bengal districts are expected to experience the most severe downpours.
The low-pressure area, originating in the Bay of Bengal, is predicted to intensify, impacting large swathes of the region, including Kolkata and the 24 Parganas. The city is likely to see light to moderate rainfall during this period.
A special weather bulletin also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea until Tuesday, as the cyclonic circulation over the area could strengthen.
