A political row has erupted after an FIR was lodged in Uttar Pradesh against a man accused of writing “I Love Muhammad” on the wall of his own house. Reacting strongly to the development, Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Haris Beeran expressed deep shock and questioned the very basis of the case.
Haris Beeran told Timeline tht he was stunned to learn that a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed over such a message, which, in his words, contained no hate speech or provocation.
“I was shocked to see that an FIR has been registered against a man just for writing ‘I love Muhammad’ on his wall. What is the offence in this? What is wrong in that statement? I cannot understand.”.
The MP further argued that the message was neither derogatory nor targeted towards any religion. “It is not hatred against any community. If a Christian man had written ‘I love Jesus’ outside his house, would the police have registered an FIR? Why is there such discrimination?” he asked.

Haris Beeran also criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, accusing him of curbing freedom of expression in the state. “This is a complete suppression of free speech in Uttar Pradesh. People are not even allowed to write words of love for their Prophet,” he alleged.
The Rajya Sabha MP condemned the police officer who registered the FIR, calling the move a misuse of law.
In his video message, Beeran also raised questions closer to home, targeting the Kerala government for extending a warm reception to Yogi Adityanath during his recent visit.
“Why did the Kerala government roll out a red carpet for Yogi? He has done so many things against the Muslim community in Uttar Pradesh. Kerala must think about this and give a proper response to the people, especially in the context of the ‘I love Muhammad’ issue,” he said.

The parliamentarian has urged the Supreme Court of India to intervene in the case and ensure that it is closed without further harassment. “I appeal to the Supreme Court to close this case immediately. Such things should not be allowed to happen in our country,” Beeran said, emphasising that freedom of religion and expression must be protected under the Constitution.
