Diplomatic tension between India and Canada have escalated following Justin Trudeau’s allegation of Indian agent’s involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India and Canada have expelled their top envoys along with the diplomats as the row intensifies. India has also expelled 6 Canadian diplomats giving them time until October 19 to leave.
While speaking on live Television, Trudeau has said India had made a “fundamental error” in supporting “criminal” acts in Canada and his government had to act on the latest findings.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they had significant information on broad criminal activity orchestrated by agents of the government of India.
Authorities also stated that the investigation revealed that the Indian government was involved in home invasions, arson, drive-by shootings, and at least one additional killing.
Meanwhile, India dismissed Canada’s claims of investigating its diplomats as “persons of interest” in Nijjar’s murder as baseless and politically driven.
The Indian government has also warned that it reserves the right to take further steps if Canada continues to target its diplomats and support separatism.
The row took another turn today as Canadian police claimed Bishnoi Group’s involvement in the killings. The row escalated when The Washington Post, sourcing Canadian officials, reported that union Home minister Amit Shah and a senior RAW official were responsible for the intelligence-gathering missions and attacks on Sikh separatists. The Indian government has not responded to this allegation yet.
According to experts, Canadian officials speaking to Western Media, and mentioning names of Indian Home Minister and NSA, by any standards means there is serious repercussions in India-Canada bilateral relations.
The relation between both the countries has been strained since 2018, with India accusing Trudeau for interfering in its domestic politics.
