New Delhi: Confirming the truce between the two neighbours, India said that Pakistan reached out to India and a ceasefire was negotiated between the two countries on Saturday. The ceasefire deal was announced by US President Donald Trump in a social media post.

The peace deal comes after weeks of escalating tensions, drone attacks and cross-border shelling between the two nuclear-armed countries.

“The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 15.30 hours (3.30 pm) this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would cease all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from 1700 hours (5 pm),” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.

In a brief press conference confirming the ceasefire agreement, he added, “Instructions have been given on both sides to implement this understanding.”

The next round of talks between the two countries has been scheduled for May 12. For Pakistan, it will include the very important issue of water since India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, which significantly affects its livelihood and agriculture.

US President Donald Trump announced the “full and immediate” ceasefire deal between both the neighbouring countries. Soon after, both India and Pakistan also confirmed the same.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has confirmed the country’s ceasefire with India. The minister added: “Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”

“India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” stated External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in an X post.
