Starting on July 1, three new controversial criminal laws will come into effect, replacing the British-era criminal laws. The three new laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) will replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.

The first FIR under Section 173 of Bhartiya Nagrik Surkasha Sanhita was registered in Delhi on Monday. All cases registered before July 1 will continue to be tried under the old laws.
