There have been several reports regarding ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, as Palestinian officials on Monday, May 26, said that Hamas has agreed to a 70-day ceasefire agreement proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. However, Witkoff later rejected reports that Hamas had accepted his offer as Israel continues to strike Gaza, killing many Palestinians.

Notably, on the verge of a much-expected ceasefire deal, an Israeli official also dismissed the proposal, saying no responsible government could accept such an agreement. The official reportedly rejected the deal proposed by Witkoff.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country intend to bring hostages back, both the living and the dead, while not mentioning anything about the latest proposed ceasefire deal with Hamas.

As per the ceasefire deal purportedly agreed by Hamas to the Witkoff’s proposals, the group would release 10 living hostages in return for a 70-day ceasefire and a partial withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The deal also includes the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, including hundreds serving lengthy prison terms.

However, Witkoff disputed Hamas’s claim that the group had agreed to his proposed deal. “That deal is on the table. Hamas should take it.” CNN quoted Witkoff.

As per a report by Al Jazeera citing sources, Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forth by the United States, though an American official later rejected the claim, stating the deal discussed was disappointing. Israeli officials also denied that the proposal was from the US President Trump who had recently suggested that they want to see if we can stop the whole situation in Gaza as soon as possible.

On the contrary, Israel has been insisting that any ceasefire would be temporary, and it does not want a permanent cessation of hostilities under current conditions.
