Washington D.C, United States: Two Israeli embassy staff members were killed in a shooting incident outside a Jewish museum in downtown Washington DC on Thursday. Authorities have arrested the suspected assailant, Elias Rodriguez, a 30-years old man from Chicago. Police have said that the suspect did not have any previous history with law enforcement.

The victims, a man and woman, were shot while exiting an event at the Capital Jewish Museum, the BBC reported, citing sources, noting that the incident appeared targeted. According to Tal Naim Cohen, a spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Washington, the Israeli diplomates were shot at close range.

The incident occurred at 21:05 local time. According to reports, multiple employees of the Israeli embassy were present at a museum event during the shooting, though the Israeli ambassador was not there at the time.

Officials say that they are investigating the incident. According to Washington police chief Pamela Smith, the suspect was seen pacing outside the museum before the event. He was seen chanting ‘Free Free Palestine’ while being in custody, as was seen in a video surfaced from the site.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called the incident a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism, adding that he is confident the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible.

The Israel Défense Force (IDF) expressed its condolences to the families of the victims of the attack on the Israeli embassy in Washington. “We are a resilient people, the people of Israel are resilient people, and the people of the United States of America are resilient people. Together we won’t be afraid, together we’ll stand, and we’re going to overcome moral depravity of people who think they’re going to achieve political gains through murder,” the IDF wrote in an X post
