India Supports UN Resolution Condemning Israeli Settlements In Palestine

India recently joined with those countries supporting the United Nations (UN) resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestine, reported NDTV. India has voted in favour of the UN resolution condemning Israeli occupation in the “Occupied Palestine territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan’. The resolution was approved on Thursday, November 9, and accepted two days after.

While seven countries including the United States and Canada opposed the resolution, another eighteen countries refused to vote. As said by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza alone in air and artillery strikes by the Israel defence force since October 7. Adding the intensity, the count includes more than 4,000 children and around 3,000 women. Meanwhile Israel reiterated their adamant stand, not to call for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, until Hamas let all the Israeli hostages free.

“India is concerned over the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza but also believes that there can be no equivocation on terror”, said the country supporting the current resolution. As reported by the news agency Press Trust of India, “the Resolution in the UNGA did not include any explicit condemnation of the terrorist attacks of October 7. An amendment was moved to include this aspect, prior to the vote on the main resolution”.

According to the reports of NDTV, India voted in favour of the amendment and it obtained 88 votes in favour but not the requisite two-thirds majority. The current decision of New Delhi was guided by its “steadfast and consistent position” on the issue and its explanation of vote reiterated this comprehensively and holistically, added the report.

The current movement of India came weeks after the nation stood back from voting on a UN resolution calling for humanitarian truce in Gaza. It was on October 27, Jordan moved a resolution to the UN General Assembly which called for an unhindered humanitarian access in Gaza strip. The resolution was titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”. 140 nations voted in favour while 14 against it and 45 abstaining.
