Iran Accuses US Of Ceasefire Breach After Ship Attack: Tensions Rise In Strait Of Hormuz

Tensions in West Asia have escalated again as Iran accused the United States of violating a ceasefire agreement after a US naval destroyer fired on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman.

According to reports, the incident took place on April 19 when the US Navy targeted a vessel identified as Touska, claiming it had ignored repeated warnings.

US President Donald Trump stated that the guided missile destroyer USS Spruance disabled the ship by hitting its engine room. In response, Iran strongly condemned the action, calling it “armed piracy” and warning of retaliation.

A spokesperson from Iran’s Khatam Al-Anbiya central command said the country’s armed forces would “soon respond” to the attack. Iranian officials also accused the US of breaking the ceasefire that had been in place since April 8, further increasing uncertainty in the region.

Amid rising tensions, Iran has reportedly decided not to participate in the next round of peace talks with the United States, which were expected to take place in Pakistan.

The development has cast doubt over ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilise the situation.

The conflict has also impacted global markets. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supply, has seen disruptions due to the standoff.

Oil prices have surged, with US crude rising over 6% and Brent crude nearing $96 per barrel. The uncertainty has affected shipping activity, although more than 20 vessels managed to pass through the strait recently.

Meanwhile, Israel has issued warnings to civilians in southern Lebanon to avoid certain areas due to ongoing security risks linked to the conflict.

Diplomatic efforts continue, with Shehbaz Sharif engaging in talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to push for regional peace.

However, with the ceasefire set to expire soon and no clear progress in negotiations, the situation remains tense and unpredictable.
