Trump Announces Iran-Israel Complete And Total Ceasefire

US President Donald Trump has declared a “complete and total ceasefire” between Israel and Iran, set to take effect within hours, potentially ending a 12-day conflict dubbed “The 12 Day War.” The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social platform on June 23, 2025 (US local time 6,02 PM) comes amidst heightened tensions following Iran’s missile attack on a US military base in Qatar and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Al Jazeera reported quoting Reuters that Qatar’ Prime Minister secured Iran’s agreement to a United States -proposed ceasefire with Israel after Donald Trump asked Doha to help persuade Tehran during a call with Qatar’s emir. Reuters cited a US source.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that there is no such agreement. “As Iran has repeatedly made clear: Israel launched war on Iran, not the other way around. As of now, there is NO “agreement” on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations. However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards. The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later,” he said.

According to Trump’s statement, the ceasefire will commence approximately six hours from his post, allowing both nations to conclude ongoing military operations. Iran will initiate the ceasefire, followed by Israel 12 hours later. By the 24th hour, the war will be officially declared over, provided both sides adhere to the agreement. Trump praised Israel and Iran for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence” in averting a prolonged conflict that could have devastated the West Asia. He expressed optimism, stating, “This is a war that could have gone on for years, but it didn’t, and never will!”

The latest episodes of the conflict began on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets, killing several senior officials. Iran retaliated with missile barrages, resulting in at least 24 deaths in Israel, while Israeli strikes reportedly killed over 400 in Iran, according to Iranian sources. The US entered the fray on June 13,  bombing key Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordow and Natanz, in what Trump called a “spectacular military success.”

Iran’s subsequent attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which caused no casualties, prompted fears of further escalation in the region, especially after all the neighbouring countries of Iran and Qatar condemned the former’s attack.

Despite Trump’s announcement, neither Israel nor Iran has officially confirmed the ceasefire, raising questions about its implementation. Reports from Tehran indicate ongoing explosions and air defence activity, suggesting military operations may not have fully subsided. A senior Iranian official told CNN that Tehran had not received a ceasefire proposal, labelling US and Israeli statements as “deception.” Middle East analyst Omar Rahman warned that a major Israeli operation, such as an attempt on Iran’s Supreme Leader, could jeopardjeopardise the truce.
