UAE Imposes New Speed Limits On Major Highways From April 14

Abu Dhabi has announced the implementation of speed limits on major highways starting from April 14. Speeding violation has always been a major concern in the UAE, as over 10 million violations were recorded just last year. Thus, to tackle the issue, the authorities had imposed heavy penalties for drivers who exceed the speed limits.

As Abu Dhabi enters into adverse weather conditions, the authorities have reduced speeding limits by 20 km/hr on Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road (E20) and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11). The speeding limit, which was initially 120 kmph, is now reduced to 100 kmph on E20 and from 160 kmph to 140 kmph on E11 as well.

Additionally, a minimum speed limit is also enforced on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, but is only applicable to those who are driving on the two leftmost lanes. Drivers who are travelling on these lanes must travel at no less than 120 kmph. Those who fail to meet the minimum speed could face a Dh 400 fine. To make sure that the drivers follow the rules, the authorities have also placed several speed signboards on the highway to avoid any kind of accidents.

Moreover, Abu Dhabi City Municipality has also introduced new red pavement markings to make revised speed limits more visible to drivers. Here are the list of roads where the speed limits have been dropped:

  •  Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road (E-22) near Sas Al Nakhl, where the limit dropped from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
  •  Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Street (E-311) near Sweihan Bridge, reduced from 140 km/h to 120 km/h.
  • The road near Baniyas Cemetery, where it decreased from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
  • Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (E-10) near Sheikh Zayed Bridge, lowered from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
  • Sections of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road (E-12) between Jubail Island and Saadiyat, and on Saadiyat Island itself, with limits reduced from 140 km/h and 120 km/h to 120 km/h and 100 km/h, respectively.

Here are the fine details one will have to pay if they violate the speed limit:
