Turkey President Tayyib Erdogan criticizes United State for sending the aircraft carrier closer to Israel and claimed that this action would result in “serious massacres” in Gaza. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Sunday that they would be sending a carrier strike group, which includes the US Gerald R. Ford, closer to Israel in response to the sudden attack by Hamas on Israel on Saturday.

In a joint press conference with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in Ankara, Erdogan questioned the US move and asked, “What will the aircraft carrier of the U.S. do near Israel, why do they come? What will boats around and aircraft on it will do?”.

He then added that this is done in motive to hit Gaza and around which will result in serious massacres there, reports Reuters.

Turkey President earlier stated that they were ready to mediate between both the countries, Israel and Palestine forces to ensure calm. The conflict occurs as Turkey, which has supported a two-state solution to the issue, harboured Hamas militants, and supported Palestinians in the past, attempts to mend relations with Israel following years of hostility.

On Tuesday, as part of its attempt to soothe tension between both the countries, Erdogan held phone calls with U.N  Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Erdogan”s Russian counterpart.

“I”m having talks with regional leaders and leaders from other countries and trying to figure out how we can mediate and how we can stop this war,” he said during the press conference. Erdogan also criticised Israel for imposing a total blockade of Gaza in response to the Hamas attack.

“They cut providing water and electricity to Gaza. Where are the human rights? This is against the universal declaration of human rights,” he said.
