Yahya Sinwar, a prominent and influential leader within Hamas, has been chosen as the head of political bureau of the Palestinian Islamist and militant group that controls the Gaza Strip. The announcement comes after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran last week. Hamas’ Political Bureau is the topmost decision-making body of the organisation. It is responsible for setting the group’s policies, overseeing its various activities, and making key strategic decisions. The political bureau includes the top leadership of Hamas, including its leader, and plays a crucial role in guiding both the political and military strategies of the organisation.

Hamas’ senior most leader in the Strip, Sinwar was born in 1962 in the Khan Younis refugee camp. Sinwar is a founding member of Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. He is often regarded as one of the most powerful figures in Gaza, known for his hardline stance and commitment to the group’s ideological goals. Western media calls Sinwar as the mastermind behind the October 7 surprise attack on Israel that ultimately led to the devastating military occupation of the strip for the last 10 months which caused nearly 40,000 deaths and displacement of millions.

Sinwar’s early involvement in militant activities led to his arrest by Israeli authorities in 1988. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his alleged role in the abduction and killing of two Israeli soldiers, as well as for other anti-occupation activities. During his 22 years in Israeli prisons, Sinwar became a key figure among Hamas prisoners, earning a reputation for his uncompromising views and leadership skills. He was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal that saw over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners freed in exchange for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

In 2017, Sinwar was elected as the leader of Hamas in Gaza, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh. His leadership marked a shift towards a more militarised and confrontational approach in Hamas’s strategies. Sinwar has been a vocal advocate for armed resistance against Israel and has played a crucial role in shaping Hamas’s military tactics, particularly during conflicts with Israel, such as the 2021 escalation.

Despite his militant background, Sinwar has also engaged in negotiations, particularly with Egypt and Qatar, regarding ceasefires and humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Israel, which had declared Sinwar as enemy number one from Gaza, was quick to respond to the ascension of the Hamas leader. Israel Katz, Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: “The appointment of arch-terrorist Yahya Sinwar as the new leader of Hamas, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, is yet another compelling reason to swiftly eliminate him and wipe this vile organization off the face of the earth.”
