Even after the fleeing of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after resigning from power, the protesters’ rage appears to persist, as reports of continuous casualties are emerging from the country. Many of the leaders associated with Awami League, the party of Sheikh Hasina, are being targeted.
Adding two more high-profile killings, Shanto Khan, a Bangladesh actor and his father and producer-director, Selim Khan, have been lynched by an angry mob on Monday. According to a report, the attack occurred at Forkkabad Bazaar in Balia Union Parishad when the father-son encountered an aggressive crowd. To guard against the attack, the due reportedly fired shots from a pistol but the mob soon assaulted and beaten them to death. They were on a run to escape the mob.

Notably, Selim was an expelled Awami League leader. and had been involved in corrupt activities and was the subject of an Anti-Corruption Commission case.
Many from the Indian film industry who have worked with Shanto Khan expressed their shock and sorrow over the brutal killings of the actor. Filmmaker Sudipto Sen has vowed to register strong protest to the new regime of Bangladesh over the killing of film personalities. In a post on X, sen said that he was “deeply anguished and angered in the saddest news of mob-lynching of the promising actor” his producer father.
“This is not acceptable, and I strongly condemn this brutal killing. This is horrendous – this is unbelievable,” he wrote.
Actor Rajatabha Dutta also remembered the Bangladeshi actor with whom he worked in the film Bikkhov (Resentment) and said that Shanto Khan was cooperative and respectful on the sets.

Bangladesh has been witnessing unrest since the protest over the job quota system rocked the country. Over 300 people including the protesters, security personnel and the members of the ruling party have been killed. After the Prime Minister’s ouster, the president dissolved the parliament while the army took over the regime. An interim government is going to be formed today with, Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus being the chief. The swearing-in is likely to be held tonight.
