As media reports alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster on Monday, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi today expressed his concern, reminding the government and authorities of the neighbouring country of their duty to protect the life, limb, and property of minorities under international law.

“The reports of minorities being attacked in Bangladesh are concerning. The government and authorities of Bangladesh have a duty under international law to protect the lives and property of minorities. There are also reports that many from the country’s majority community are protecting the homes and places of worship of minority communities. This should be the norm,” Owaisi wrote in a post on X.

According to a statement by Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, several houses and shops of the minorities have come under attack, such as vandalism and looting. Notably, it was reported that the students, rights groups, and mosques have been urging the protesters to protect the lives and properties of minorities as unrest continues in Bangladesh.

Gobinda Pramanik, General Secretary of the Bangladesh National Hindu Mahajot, rejected the allegations of attacks against Hindu temples. He emphasised that it was the houses of some Hindu leaders who are close to Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, that were attacked by the protesters, adding that the houses of Muslim leaders who are active in the former Prime Minister’s party were also vandalised.

Rejecting the media claims of a “systematic attack” against minorities, Gobinda Pramanik alleged that the journalists are making up stories. He also named a media house saying that the ‘Republic’ TV from India is spreading rumors and making strange claims. He further affirmed that the temples are being protected in the country.

The massive protest against the Hasina’g regime over the controversial quota system in government jobs had claimed over 300 lives, infuriating the demonstrators to call for her resignation and a new government. After she fled to India, when protesters marched towards her residence, they stormed her home and carried out vandalism and looting. There were also attacks against the Awami League leaders and their properties nationwide.
