Bangladesh: "I Take All Responsibility", Promises Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman

With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the capital amid massive protests, Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, said an interim government will be soon formed. The army assured that an interim government will be formed “through a discussion”.
He also assured that perpetrators of all killings will be brought to book. “Maintain peace and tranquillity in the country. We will be able to run the country nicely”, said the army chief.

In a press briefing, the army said that “Business will continue as usual and interim government will be formed by army. The armed forces will take all decisions. I take all responsibility”. He said he is to meet the President now.

Waker-Uz-Zaman calls an end to the violent protests. He has vowed to “stop the murders,” “stop the violence,” and “bring peace back to the country. He pleaded with citizens to “listen” and “work” with army forces. He confirmed that a political transition is underway, and stated he has met officials from the BNP, Jatiya and Jamaat-e-Islami parties. “Please keep calm and avoid anarchy”, he said.

He directed the troops not to open fire, and promised to investigate killings that has happened so far. The army chief also added that Martial law will not be needed if peace is restored.

It has been reported that Hasina, along with her sister, departed from the premier’s official residence, Gano Bhaban, for a safer location. Reportedly, Hasina was given an ultimatum of 45 minutes to resign by the army. Reports suggest that she might land in Agartala, India.

Bangladesh’s Channel 24 broadcast images of crowds running into the premier’s official residence in the capital, waving to the camera as they celebrated.
