Communal Tension Erupts In Nepal’s Birgunj After Mosque Vandalism, India Seals Border

Communal tension has gripped parts of southern Nepal after a mosque was vandalised, triggering violent protests and prompting India to seal its border in the affected region.

The unrest broke out in Birgunj town of Nepal’s Parsa district on Tuesday, which lies close to the India–Nepal border near Bihar’s Raxaul.

The situation escalated after a video with alleged religious content went viral on social media.

The clip, reportedly posted by two local men from Nepal’s Dhanusha district, sparked anger among several groups and quickly led to protests. What began as demonstrations soon turned violent, with clashes reported in parts of Parsa and Dhanusha districts.

According to local reports, the two men were caught by residents and handed over to the police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. However, tensions worsened after a mosque in the Sakhuwa Maran area was vandalised. This incident deepened communal unrest and brought large numbers of people onto the streets.

During the protests, stones were thrown at police personnel, and a local police station was vandalised. To control the situation, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Authorities later imposed a curfew in Birgunj city to prevent further violence and restore order.

As the security situation deteriorated, India took precautionary steps and sealed the border with Nepal in the region.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has stopped all civilian movement across the border, allowing only emergency services to pass. Security has been tightened at key crossing points, including the Maitri Bridge, where thorough checks are being carried out.

Patrolling has also been increased in nearby border areas, with security teams closely monitoring movements to prevent any spillover of violence. Officials said the measures were necessary to ensure safety on both sides of the border.
