At a time when the world is still coming to terms with a series of air disasters, most recently the tragic Air India accident that claimed the lives of 279 people (241 onboard and 38 on the ground), a new ranking of the world’s safest airlines has been released.

The AirlineRatings.com, an airline safety rating website, recently had listed the names of the 20 safest airlines in the world. The website considered fleet size and age, pilot proficiency, safety protocols, and the number of incidents, among many other factors.

According to the list, Air New Zealand is the safest airline in the world, which is followed by the Australian flag carrier Qantas. Qatar Airways, Emirates in the UAE, and Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong are tied for third place. Qantas was ranked second with just a point difference of 1.50.

Meanwhile, HK Express is the world’s safest low-cost carrier. FlyDubai and Air Arabia are also listed to be among the safest low-cost carriers.

The top airlines that were listed do not compromise on their safety protocols and pilot training. Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific are impressive with their fleet age, rate of accidents, and overall safety protocols.

Apart from consultations with check pilots and aviation experts, the following parameters play a key role in determining the rankings: serious incidents over the past two years, fleet age, fleet size, rate of incidents, fatalities, profitability, IOSA certification, ICAO country audit pass, and pilot skill and training.

According to a recent study by MIT, between 2018 and 2022, the global death risk per flight boarding was approximately one in 13.7 million. In comparison, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 1.19 million fatalities from road accidents in 2023, equating to more than two deaths per minute.
