President Joe Biden will address the nation from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. on Sunday following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during a political rally in Pennsylvania. In a brief statement on Sunday afternoon, Biden expressed his and First Lady Jill Biden’s prayers for Trump and the family of the deceased victim. He also conveyed his relief that Trump is “doing well and recovering.”
Biden stated that there is no place for such violence in America and emphasized that the assassination attempt contradicts the nation’s core values. He expressed that such acts are not representative of American ideals and must not be tolerated.
He highlighted that unity is the most crucial goal at this moment, though debates and disagreements will continue. He reaffirmed that Americans should not lose sight of their collective identity and values.
“An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation, everything. It’s not who we are as a nation. It’s not America, and we cannot allow this to happen. Unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is important than that right now, Unity,” President Biden said.
The President revealed that he had a brief but positive conversation with Trump and that he and Jill Biden are keeping Trump and his family in their prayers. He also offered his deepest condolences to the family of the victim, Corey Comperatore – the 50-year-old father and former firefighter who was killed at the rally -, noting that the deceased was a father who was trying to protect his family.
Biden confirmed that he has instructed US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to review security measures for the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and to conduct an independent review of the rally’s security. He assured that the findings of this review will be shared with the public.
He noted that the FBI is leading the investigation, which is still in its early stages. Biden urged the public to avoid making assumptions about the shooter’s motives or affiliations and to allow the FBI and its partners to conduct a thorough and swift investigation.
“The FBI is leading this investigation which is still in its early stages. We don’t yet have any information about the motive of the shooter, we know who he is. I urge everyone.. please… don’t make assumptions about his motive or affiliations… let the FBI and their partner agencies do their job. I have instructed this investigation to be thorough and swift,” he said.
The President was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and Attorney General Merrick Garland during his address.
The shooting occurred at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where the shooter attempted to assassinate Trump, who later reported being shot in the ear and feeling the bullet penetrate his skin, according to a post on his Truth Social account.
