During a skydiving demonstration at the G7 summit in the southern Italy, US President Joe Biden wanders off, only to be pulled back by Georgia Meloni, the host nation’s Prime Minister. The video capturing the moments have gone viral. As the leaders of the world’s wealthiest countries applauded the evening parachuting presentation, the video shows that the 81-year-old US president’s attention was visibly wandering away from where the others were looking.

He appeared to miss the action happening right in front of him as he shuffled a few steps away, turning the other way and appeared to say something to an officer packing a parachute.

At this point, Meloni, who was at the other end of the group, has walked over, walking backwards, still facing her fellow leaders and touched Biden’s arm to pull him back to the scene.

The rest of the group gathered around Biden for a photograph, for which he slipped on his signature aviator sunglasses.

The moment was shared by the Republican National Committee’s RNC Research X (formerly twitter) account. The post read “WHAT IS BIDEN DOING?”.

Comments were quick to follow. Dan McLaughlin, senior writer of National Review tweeted, “As if Meloni doesn’t have enough on her hand, now she’s stuck playing chaperon to Grandpa Joe”.

Ian Miller, Outkick writer wrote, “The Prime Minister of another country had to go track him down and stop him from aimlessly wandering off…what an embarrassment”.

Andrew Bates, White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary, defended Biden and said that the clip was distorted. He said Biden was “saying congratulations to one of the divers and giving thumbs up”.

Earlier, at the time of introduction, Biden appeared to be burying his face in Meloni’s hair as the two embraced upon his arrival in Italy. Before getting down from the stage, the US President raised his hand in an awkward salute before walking away. The strange encounter was also discussed widely.

The 81-year-old US President will not attend the third and final day of the G7 summit, as he will fly back to West Coast to attend a Hollywood campaign fundraiser hosted by actor George Clooney.
