The Group of 7 leaders (G7), gathered in Canada for a 51st G7 summit, extended support for Israel and called Iran a source of instability in the Middle East.

In a statement issued late on Monday, the nations stressed for peace and stability in the region and added that in this context, “we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.”

The latest conflict began on Friday, when Israel launched surprising air strikes on Iran targeting military and nuclear infrastructure. In response, the Islamic Republic also engaged in retaliatory counter-attacks.

The conflict has been major topic of agenda at the leaders’ summit and they agreed that Iran can not possess a nuclear weapon.

“Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the statement read.

Along with resolving the Iranian crisis the leaders of world economies stressed for a “ceasefire in Gaza”.

“We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” it added.

Meanwhile, Trump made an early exit from the summit amid escalated tensions between Israel and Iran. He also urged all Iranians to evacuate Tehran, the Iranian capital, on his social media platform.

Iran said that at least 224 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in five days, while Israel officials reported that 24 civilians had been killed and thousands of citizens had been evacuated, Reuters reported.
