In an important alert, Japan’s meteorological agency warned of a ‘major tsunami’ after a massive earthquake of 7.6 magnitude hit the country on Monday. The agency issued an alert along the coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.

NHK TV, Japan’s public media corporation, warned that the water could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet) and instructed people to move to the top of the nearby building or high areas immediately. There have been no reported damages so far.

Following the initial quake, there have been several aftershocks, forcing to predict waves as high as 5 meters. However, a tsunami was also expected to hit Yamagata and Hyogo prefectures, according to The Japan Times.

Japan is seeing recurrent quakes as another earthquake of magnitude 5.0 has been reported in the Ishikawa region of Japan in the past hours
