A Muslim mob lynched a man in northwestern Pakistan. The mob broke into a police station, took the man who was held there with them and killed him over allegations that he had desecrated the Qur’an. Allegedly, the attackers also torched the police station, and police vehicles parked there, in Madyan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Reportedly, Mohammed Ismail, the man who was killed was a tourist, who was staying at a hotel in the town, when some of the locals turned against him and accused him of blasphemy.

Local police officer Rahim Ullah said that Ismail was taken to the police station for his safety. He said the mob reached the station, took the man, beat him to death and burned his body. His remains were left on the road.

Ullah said that additional police officers arrived at the station in question to bring things under control.

Reportedly, charges of blasphemy can carry death sentence in Pakistan. International and national rights groups say that blasphemy accusations are widely used to intimidate the religious  minorities in the country.
