PM Modi Congratulates New Zealand's Prime Minister Elect Christopher Luxon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Christopher Luxon, who is the Prime Minister elect of New Zealand, for their victory in the country’s general election. Taking to X (formerly twitter), Mr. Modi wrote the he is looking forward to work “together to further strengthen India-New Zealand ties”.

 

It was not only India who congratulated Mr. Luxon for his victory. Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong “warmly congratulated” the new Prime Minister of New Zealand for “leading the National Party to victory at general election”. Reminiscing the long-standing relationship, Mr. Long said that he look forward to working together with Mr. Luxon for further strengthening the bilateral ties alomng with regional and international cooperation.

Christopher Luxon has had a sweeping win enough to form a new “conservative government” in New Zealand on October 14, 2023. Chris Hipkins who have been serving as the country’s Prime Minister said he was “not in a position to form a government” and has congratulated the “premier-in-waiting”, Mr. Luxon. Mr. Hipkins has replaced Jacinda Ardern in January. The former Prime Minister, Jasinda Arden, who was a “charismatic and loved” leader of the country surprised everyone with her resignation. She said she had “no more in tank” to lead the country forward.

The National Party and its coalition ACT has bagged 61 seats with 97 percentage vote, which is a enough to cement their majority in the Parliament with 120 seats. Though the election campaign has been hard for the party as the country fall under an exigent economic crisis and New Zealanders were grappling with the high cost of living. Mr. Luxon “pledged” that he will bring back New Zealand back on track  and promised to “build the economy and deliver tax relief”.

Mr. Luxon worked as an executive Air New Zealand before stepping to politics in 2019. He sems excited to lead his country by being at the van guard. While talking to AFP, Mr. Luxon said, “I cannot wait to get stuck in and get to work because New Zealand has chosen change and we will get this country back on track”.
