South Korea: A Jeju Air flight carrying 181 people crashed at South Korea’s Muan airport on Sunday, 179 feared dead, as per reports. The plane veered off the runway and collided with a wall. The incident occurred when the flight 7C2216, returning from Thailand, was landing shortly after 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) at the airport. Two people were rescued, authorities said.

All domestic and international flights in South Korea have been cancelled following the plane crash, Yonhap news agency reports. Among the 181 people, there were 175 passengers including two Thai nationals, as well as six crew members.

The video of the plane crash emerged on social media.

As per preliminary observations, officials believes that the accident occurred due to a landing gear failure caused by a bird strike. They have started an on-site investigation to identify the exact cause, the Yonhap news agency reports.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok has instructed the officials to mobilise of all resources to save the passengers. “All related agencies must mobilise all available resources to save the personnel,” NDTV reports, citing  government statement.

After the crash, Jeju Air issued a statement in their website. “We deeply apologize to all those affected by the incident at Muan Airport. We will make every effort to resolve the situation. We sincerely regret the distress caused,” the statement read.

The current plane crash occurred days after an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed on Wednesday in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people.
