After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the United States expressed concerns with India over its relationship with Russia. The US on Monday requested India to raise Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity with Putin.
On PM Modi’s Moscow visit, calling India his “strategic partner”, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that India is a strategic partner to America with whom it engages in a “full and frank dialogue”, including its concerns “about the relationship with Russia”.

“And we would urge India, as we do any country when it engages with Russia, to make clear that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine needs to be one that respects the UN charter, that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity, Ukraine’s sovereignty,” the news agency Reuters quotes as the US State Department spokesperson said at a daily press briefing.
Ever since Russia began war with Ukraine in 2022, India has been encountering increasing concern from the US to distance itself. India responded to it by citing its long-serving connection with Russia and its economic needs; nevertheless, it has supported for a peaceful resolution to the continuing war.
PM Modi met Russian President at latter’s residence in Moscow on the eve of the NATO 75th anniversary summit in Washington. He is on a two-day visit to Russia. It marks Modi’s first visit to Russia since the country invaded Ukraine in 2022. The Russian President applauded Modi for his historic third term in the elections and also lauded latter for dedicating his life to the people of India.

After their meeting, PM Modi expressed gratitude to Russian president and posted on X: “Looking forward to our talks tomorrow as well, which will surely go a long way in further cementing the bonds of friendship between India and Russia.”
