What Role Change Will the Renaming Of The US Department of War Bring?

US President Donald has signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense as the ‘Department of War’. The Dept was named as the Department of War until World War 2; however, later the officials sought to emphasize the Pentagon’s role to prevent conflicts. DoD, informally called the Pentagon, is headquartered in a building shaped like that.

While mentioning the role of the US contribution in World Wars, the US President Donald Trump said, “We won the First World War. We won the Second World War. We won everything before that and in between — and then we decided to go woke, and we changed the name to Department of Defense. So, we’re going Department of War.”

The US President said that the Dept of War has a “Stronger sound”. Trump has signaled that lean upon the US military to support his policy priorities of border security and immigration enforcement.

The Secretary of War in America had the Department of War starting in 1789, when Congress established it as a cabinet-level department to oversee the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. The department operated it in this capacity when the National Security Act abolished it.

The move is seen by many as an attempt to maintain US hegemony in a world where it is turning more into a multipolar world with the rise of China, Russia, and India.

Renaming the name of the Department of War again is seen as raising a potential conflict. However, War Secretary Peter Hegseth said the US is not looking for a conflict with Russia and China. However, the change would reflect the offensive capability that was missing in the name earlier.

The announcement came 48 hours after China held a spectacular military parade showcasing impressive advances in military hardware.

Peter Hegseth said the department had already reestablished a warrior ethos, and asserted that the name change would refocus the military on its core mission of “warfighting, lethality, meritocracy, standards and readiness”, which he said away from the woke culture and social issues.

The name change will direct Hegseth to seek legislative approval for a formal name change to undo a change made in 1949. Congress must pass legislation to make the renaming official.

However, no such details of government spending for the newly named department are revealed, but altering the name with a global footprint is expected to have implications for equipment, documents, website, building, and others.
