Who Is Chloe Cheung? 19-Year-Old Chinese Fugitive Living In UK

Chloe Cheung, a 19-year-old girl from Hong Kong, has been reported to be one of China’s  wanted fugitives with a bounty of HK$1 million (approximately $100,000) on her head. The teenager, an activist, started her dissenting with the Chinese regime in Hong Kong in 2019.

Cheung initially by joined protests against the proposed extradition bill that many viewed as a threat to Hong Kong’s autonomy. Facing police actions, including tear gas and other crackdowns, the teenager turned out to be more politically active and conscious. The oppression of her struggle increased her vitality to speak out against the authorities over Hong Kong’s autonomy.

With the Chinese government criminalizing dissidents in Hong Kong, many activists started to get arrested, and Chloe too struck in the eye of the authorities, which led them to issue a reward for capturing her.

Hong Kong police issued the arrest warrant when she was aged 11. Chloe is the youngest of 19 activists accused of breaching a national security law introduced by Beijing.

In 2021, she and her family moved to the UK under a special visa scheme for Hong Kongers. Since fled to the UK, Cheung has been hosting many activist Hong Kongers in the European country. She reportedly lobbies UK high officials, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to protest the Hong Kongers who arrive.

However, Hong Kong secretary for Security, Chris Tang Ping-keung, has condemned the report of a teenage fugitive wanted for national security offenses. He accused the reports of attempting to deprive readers of their right to the truth by not including the SAR government’s response in the interview with Chloe Cheung Hei-ching, who is wanted for alleged national security offenses.

Tang clarified the wanted persons, including Cheung, who have fled overseas to escape justice, are suspected of continuing to commit offenses under the Hong Kong National Security Law. He added that the executive authority of Hong Kong would pursue combating criminals abroad

Cheung, was reportedly declared wanted on  suspicion of incitement to secession and collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security. Notably, the potential for the UK to engage in trade relationship with China has pushed narratives that the UK might compromise its commitment to stand by the Chloe and others who fled from Hong Kong.
