Renault And Nissan Forge Ahead With Petrol-Only SUV Lineup For India

Renault and Nissan are set to shake up the Indian SUV market with the launch of their new lineup, which will include the highly anticipated new Duster along with its Nissan counterpart, slated for late 2025. Both automakers have also hinted at seven-seater variants of these models, expected to hit the market by late 2026. In a joint teaser released by the alliance, a glimpse of both models was showcased, hinting at a promising future for SUV enthusiasts in India. Sources within the companies have revealed that the engine choices for these SUVs will predominantly feature turbo-petrol options.

The turbo-petrol lineup is likely to include the HR10, a 1.0-liter unit found in models like the Kiger and Magnite, albeit possibly tuned for higher power outputs to suit the larger SUVs. Additionally, the HR13, a robust 1.3-liter turbo-petrol engine producing 156hp, previously seen in the Nissan Kicks and the earlier-generation Renault Duster, is expected to make a comeback. Both engines are anticipated to be paired with 6-speed manual and CVT gearbox options, ensuring a smooth and efficient driving experience.

While entry-level variants may feature a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, there are no plans to reintroduce the renowned K9K diesel engine. Although hybrid powertrains are being explored, their development costs have not yet been incorporated into the project. These SUVs will be built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s modular CMF-B platform, which is renowned for its versatility and efficiency. With a significant localization effort, Renault and Nissan aim to achieve competitive pricing without compromising on quality or performance.

The first-generation Renault Duster made a lasting impression on the Indian midsize SUV segment, boasting rugged aesthetics, nimble handling, and a range of powertrain options, including the popular K9K diesel. However, the upcoming models will embrace a petrol-only strategy, with hybrid variants unlikely to debut. While re-entering the competitive midsize SUV market poses its challenges, Renault and Nissan are poised to captivate consumers with a compelling combination of innovative design, competitive pricing, and advanced technology.
