The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has formally started working on Bharat NCAP 2.0. Ujjwala Karle, the deputy director and leader of ARAI’s Technology Group, provided the confirmation. Karle said during the second edition of the ADAS Show in Bengaluru, that they are working towards creating this new version of Bharat NCAP, with work already in progress.
With Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) becoming more standard in newer models, Bharat NCAP 2.0, the next iteration of India’s automotive safety assessment program, will extend its testing capabilities to include these features. Some of the most reasonably priced vehicles with ADAS capabilities are presently available from manufacturers including Hyundai, Kia, MG, Tata Motors, Honda, and Mahindra, and this list is only going to get longer.

Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and other intelligent car systems are all included under the general name “ADAS.” At the moment, India offers ADAS features up to Level 2 autonomy. Karle did point out that the main difficulty with ADAS systems “lies in adapting these features” for use cases in India. We don’t want these mechanisms to be in place only to be available, only to be turned off when necessary. Rather, they ought to be adjusted to fit Indian driving circumstances and user demands.
The Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), developed by ARAI and launched in April 2023, rates passenger cars according to their performance in crash tests and adheres to the Global NCAP standards. Additionally, the effort increases the export potential of automobiles made by Indian automakers. The Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XUV 9e, Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Tucson, and Citroen Basalt are among the 14 vehicles that Bharat NCAP has tested thus far.
The inclusion of ADAS testing in Bharat NCAP 2.0’s evaluation procedure represents a major advancement in Indian automobile safety. It’s critical to make sure these cutting-edge driver assistance systems are adapted for Indian driving conditions as they become more common. The new Bharat NCAP will assist standardize safety standards and increase consumer confidence, as top automakers have already begun installing ADAS in their vehicles. Furthermore, this program increases the worldwide competitiveness of automobiles built in India, reaffirming the country’s dedication to road safety and automotive innovation.
