BYD is planning to unveil an electric Maxi Scooter after successfully launching third electric car in India. BYD is the Chinese automaker that would seek to increase its market share in the country’s budding electric vehicle segment. This time it is going to be a sporty EV that looks in tune with the Yamaha T-Max.
BYD, which recently become the new No. 1 in EV sales after record deliveries. They are facing a slowing market in the United States and Europe. A competitive pricing is also eating into its growth in China. India, with a rising number of rich car buyers, is a lucrative market as the EV market is still taking off. Around 1.5 million electric vehicles were sold there in 2023, leaving BYD to compete with local heavyweights such as Tata Motors Ltd. BYD entered India in 2007 with its electronics business, but its operations have only picked up in the Automobile segment in the past few years. Tesla, is also looking to enter India’s booming market very soon.
But now, Chinese EV maker BYD is the largest electric car maker in the world and is now, planning to enter the two-wheeler space with its first product, a Maxi Scooter. BYD has an edge over others as it is the world’s second-largest battery manufacturer as well.
The soon to be launched scooter resembles the Suzuki Burgman and the Yamaha T-Max. But BYD will use its expertise to keep the costs under control as they are catering to cost conscious buyers in India.
The scooter is expected to get large front apron with a tall windshield, sporty panels, USD forks, large wheels with twin disc brakes at the front, dual rear shocks, twin headlight design, and more. To keep the battery weight in check it could be placed on the floorboard. There are no details about the technical specifications, however, the upcoming 2024 EICMA could showcase its unveiling. The scooter will most likely go on sale in the place of its origin which is China first, followed by other global markets.
BYD has done bumper business after selling cars in 2023, where the figures went up 314% from previous year. BYD is trying to bring premium-ness and tech-spec in the EV segment, which is going to be their sole focus if they want to plan the advent of another booming EV culture in both the two-wheeler and four-wheeler segment.
