Hero MotoCorp is starting to see results from its diversification into the high-end middleweight motorbike market. During the April–December 2024 period, the firm, which produces the Hero Mavrick 440 and the Harley-Davidson X440, sold 12,188 units of these two models. Hero MotoCorp now holds a 13 percent stake in this market, representing a 77 percent rise from the previous year.

Only the Harley-Davidson X440, which was introduced in July 2023, was included in the 6,862 units sold the previous year. Under the terms of the Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson license agreement, the X440 is the first high-end motorbike to enter the 400cc+ market in India. Hero’s Garden Factory in Neemrana, Rajasthan, is where the co-developed, Indian-made Harley is manufactured. It comes in three different versions: Denim (Rs 2.40 lakh), Vivid (Rs 2.60 lakh), and S (Rs 2.80 lakh). Between April and December 2024, 8,974 units were sold, representing a 31% increase.

Hero’s first motorbike based on this platform, the Mavrick 440, was introduced in February 2024. In the nine months leading up to December 2024, 3,214 units of its three variants—Base (Rs 1.99 lakh), Mid (Rs 2.14 lakh), and Top (Rs 2.24 lakh)—were sold. According to SIAM data, two-wheeler manufacturers shipped 92,881 350cc to 500cc bikes over the nine-month period in question, a 36% increase.

With 47,766 units (up 51 percent) and a 51 percent market share, Bajaj Auto leads the category with its own models as well as a number of motorcycles sold under the Husqvarna, KTM, and Triumph brands. The excellent market success of the 400cc Triumph bikes is said to have helped Bajaj’s performance. With 29,519 units, including the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450, Royal Enfield holds a 32 percent market share. India Kawasaki Motors shipped 346 Ninja 500 and Eliminator motorcycles, Honda sold 183 NX500 units, while Piaggio delivered 2,879 Aprilia RS 457 cars.

Of the 94,42,637 bikes sold between April and December 2024, just 1% were 350cc–500cc motorcycles. Nonetheless, the robust double-digit annual rise indicates the growing demand for high-end two-wheelers. Hero MotoCorp’s success in the high-end middleweight market demonstrates the robust year-over-year rise in demand for high-performance motorcycles.
