Kawasaki has pulled the veils off its first dual-sport bike for India—the KLX 230! The Kawasaki KLX230 has been revealed fully, and this is the first serious road-going Japanese off-road bike in our country. The KLX230 has a simple, air-cooled engine and a 2-valve, 233cc single-cylinder motor making 18.1 hp at 8,000 rpm and 18.3 Nm of torque at 6,400 rpm.
This engine comes with a 6-speed gearbox, unlike a 5-speed unit on its primary rival, the Hero Xpulse 200 4V. Kawasaki has localised the KLX230 to keep its price competitive in the Indian market, increasing the possibility that a localised W230 could also be introduced. The company already sells the W175 in India, a locally manufactured model. This engine is fitted inside a perimeter frame suspended by a 37mm telescopic fork and monoshock.
As is typical off-road-focused dualsport bike, braking duties are handled by a 265mm front disc and 220mm rear disc, supplemented by switchable dual-channel ABS. This is a pretty strong machine with minimal features and basic bodywork; displaying all the information to the rider is a simple LCD display, which has Bluetooth connectivity. There is also an LED headlight on the KLX230. The 2025 Kawasaki W230 has been introduced in the USA, positioning it slightly above the Ninja 500.
Seat height is at 880mm, but with such a slim motorcycle, getting your feet down is not a harrowing experience. There is an optional low seat available, which brings the seat height down to 866mm, which is still quite tall. The KLX 230 weighs 139 kg, which is a light bike, and is available in two colours: the signature Lime Green and a more muted Battle Grey.
There are a range of accessories available for the KLX230, such as crash protection, hand guards, a luggage rack, a USB-C charger, and a handlebar pad. Kawasaki hasn’t revealed the price of the KLX230, which will only be revealed in December. However, bookings are open with a token amount of Rs 5,000, and deliveries will begin in January 2025. 2024 Kawasaki KLX230 S is Kawasaki’s answer to the need for a lowered intro-level dualsport motorcycle that doesn’t compromise on power or handling.
