KTM Plans MV Agusta's Triumphant Return to MotoGP in 2027

The legendary Italian motorcycle manufacturer, MV Agusta, is set to make a factory team comeback to MotoGP in 2027. This strategic move is long sought to acquire iconic brands in the motorcycle industry. After unsuccessful attempts to purchase Ducati from the Volkswagen Group, Pierer secured a 50.1% majority stake in MV Agusta through KTM, marking a new chapter for the Italian brand.

MotoGP: Bringing MV Agusta Back

In 2023, Pierer hinted at the possibility of MV Agusta returning to MotoGP. Recently, these speculations were confirmed by Hubert Trunkenpolz, CEO of MV Agusta, who announced that the brand will compete in the 2027 MotoGP season alongside KTM. This decision comes after KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas, all owned by Pierer Mobility AG, established a strong presence in MotoGP, with GasGas fielding a satellite team.

Technical Plans and Innovations

To manage costs effectively, the new MV Agusta MotoGP bikes will utilize KTM’s 850cc engine, introduced with the upcoming MotoGP regulations in 2027. Despite sharing this core component, MV Agusta aims to differentiate its bikes with unique aerodynamics, riding stances, and frame designs. This approach ensures that while the power unit remains consistent, MV Agusta will retain its distinct identity on the track. Trunkenpolz also confirmed that KTM would continue supporting the GasGas Tech 3 MotoGP satellite team.

Strategic Business Revamp

When questioned about the 2027 timeline, Trunkenpolz explained that MV Agusta needs time to stabilize its business operations from 2024 to 2026. Pierer Mobility AG’s strategy includes ramping up MV Agusta’s production capacity and expanding its international market presence. This period of consolidation is crucial for the brand to ensure a successful and competitive return to MotoGP.

MV Agusta’s Storied Legacy

The return of MV Agusta to MotoGP is laden with historical significance. The brand’s iconic red, silver, and gold colours evoke memories of its dominance from the 1950s to the 1970s. MV Agusta was a powerhouse in motorcycle racing, boasting 270 Grand Prix race wins, 38 Riders’ Championships, and 37 Constructors’ titles. Additionally, the brand has claimed victory at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy 34 times. However, financial difficulties led to their withdrawal from the sport in 1976.

The 2027 season promises to be a nostalgic and thrilling return for MV Agusta, as the brand seeks to reclaim its position at the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. With KTM’s support and strategic planning, MV Agusta’s comeback to MotoGP is set to be a significant milestone in motorcycle racing history.
