Mahindra is set to unveil the much-anticipated 5-door version of its iconic Thar on August 15, 2024, coinciding with India”s Independence Day. The development comes after a series of sightings of test mules, indicating Mahindra”s long-standing commitment to expanding the Thar lineup. This new variant is set to offer enhanced space and versatility, challenging its competitors head-on.

Following the tradition set in 2020, when Mahindra introduced the second-generation Thar, this launch on Independence Day signifies a significant milestone for the brand. The 5-door Thar, anticipated for years, promises to maintain the rugged appeal of its 3-door sibling while introducing several notable enhancements.

Externally, the 5-door Thar retains the distinctive characteristics of its predecessor, featuring a robust, boxy profile, round headlamps, vertical taillamps, and a rear-mounted spare wheel. However, subtle updates such as LED lighting elements and a reimagined front bumper with circular fog lamps will distinguish the new model. Moreover, the longer wheelbase and overall length translate into increased cabin space, particularly benefiting rear passengers.

Inside, a revamped dashboard hosts a larger touchscreen infotainment system complemented by a fully digital instrument cluster. New features expected include wireless connectivity options, electric sunroof, rear armrests, Type-C charging ports, and advanced keyless entry, among others, promising an elevated driving experience.

In terms of safety, the 5-door Thar is likely to uphold Mahindra”s commitment to passenger protection with six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, and front parking sensors. While advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) haven”t been confirmed, standard safety features such as electronic stability program (ESP) and hill descent control ensure confident off-road performance.

Under the hood, the 5-door Thar is expected to offer the same powertrain options as its predecessor: a 2.0-litre mHawk diesel engine and a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine. These engines, possibly tuned for enhanced performance, will be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Furthermore, the inclusion of a low-range transfer case with a mechanical locking differential ensures superior off-road capabilities.

While the name of the 5-door variant remains undisclosed, speculations suggest it might adopt the moniker “Thar Armada,” paying homage to Mahindra”s iconic lineage. This renaming could signify the model”s evolution and distinct identity within the Thar lineup.

The imminent launch of the 5-door Mahindra Thar starts a new chapter in the brand”s off-road legacy. With expanded dimensions, modern features, and robust performance, it aims to carve a niche in the competitive SUV segment, offering enthusiasts a compelling blend of versatility and adventure.
