Toyota certainly has the power to overpower its rival SUV’s as Fortuner continues to be the undisputed king for the customers in India. Having the best road presence in the Indian car market, it has created an image of being sturdy and stylish which many people want to associate with.
Reliability of the Toyota brand also boosts its image and its exorbitant price tag, the Fortuner is one of the best sellers in the SUV segment. The second-gen Fortuner made its way back in 2016 which was followed by a facelift in 2021. Fortuner competes against the likes of MG Gloster, Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq.
Toyota Fortuner’s third generation model will have new turbo petrol engine. Toyota is also considering to introduce new turbocharged petrol motor with a hybrid powertrain, which was displayed by Toyota earlier in May this year along with two other new generation petrol powertrains. The new-generation of motors will be launched keeping in mind that SUV are carbon neutral and are compatible to run on both petrol and diesel engines including liquid hydrogen, synthetic fuels and biofuels.
The 2.0-litre petrol unit will be available in three different powertrains. It will begin with the regular road-going cars, the mid-level for performance cars, and the highest one will be reserved for Sport range for motorsports enthusiasts. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor will churn 300 Bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. There is substantial increase over the 164 bhp and 245 Nm produced by the current 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit.
Toyota will retain its 2.8-litre diesel unit along as the new-gen motors are compatible with a wide range of fuel options. This would help Toyota phase out diesels SUV’s gradually in the future in select markets. This motor will replace Toyota’s 2.4-litre turbo petrol unit, which will be 10% smaller than the outgoing model but will also pump in 30% more power.
The downsizing will help Toyota bring down the weight of the engine and improve overall performance of the car. This, new motor is also expected to be used in— Hilux. A global debut will mark the entry of the new-gen Fortuner along with new petrol engine which is expected in late 2025 while an India launch is possible in 2026.
