Renault has officially introduced its latest SUV, the Kardian, designed specifically for emerging markets outside Europe, including Latin America and Africa. The compact SUV made its global debut at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, marking a strategic move in Renault”s global plan until 2027. Manufactured in Brazil, the Kardian is set to expand its operations to Morocco, taking on rivals like the Fiat Pulse in Latin American markets.
Key Features and Platform:
The Renault Kardian is built on the new Common Module Family (CMF) platform, designed to underpin eight models globally, with a primary focus on emerging markets. Measuring 4.12 meters, the Kardian positions itself above the India-spec Kiger, sharing design elements such as the distinctive C-shaped LED taillamps. The front showcases a modern split lighting setup, featuring sleek LED DRLs on top and main headlamps below the bonnet. Noteworthy exterior elements include a blacked-out multi-layered front grille, a shark fin antenna, faux aluminum inserts, and robust all-black plastic claddings.
Interior Design and Features:
Inside the cabin, the Kardian boasts a minimalist layout with prominent features, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ambient lighting, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a digital instrument cluster. The safety package includes six airbags and 13 functions under the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, incorporating features like a blind-spot warning system and a multi-view camera system.
Powertrain and Expected Launch:
The Renault Kardian is powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine generating 123 bhp and 220 Nm of peak torque. Paired exclusively with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the SUV promises a dynamic driving experience. While Renault currently has no plans to introduce the Kardian in India, the CMF architecture on which it is based raises anticipation for potential upcoming models in the Indian market. Speculation suggests the third-gen Duster, set to debut globally on November 29, could leverage the CMF platform and make its way to India by 2025.
Renault”s introduction of the Kardian SUV underscores its strategic commitment to cater to emerging markets outside Europe. With a focus on Latin America and Africa, the Kardian brings a blend of innovative design, robust features, and advanced safety technologies. Built on the versatile CMF platform, this compact SUV sets the stage for Renault”s global plan until 2027. While its initial launch targets markets like Brazil and Morocco, the anticipation grows for potential models based on the CMF architecture to make their way to India, possibly with the upcoming third-gen Duster. The Kardian signifies Renault”s adaptability to diverse market demands and its pursuit of a dynamic automotive future.
