KTM has introduced the upgraded 1390 Super Duke R, marking a significant evolution in its flagship street naked motorcycle. The revamped model showcases enhancements in design, mechanics, and electronics, distinguishing itself from its predecessor, the 1290 Super Duke. The 1390 Super Duke R is constructed on a reinforced trellis frame with thinner walls, contributing to a reduced overall weight. The chassis has been fine-tuned for increased stiffness, particularly during cornering, elevating its cornering capabilities. Available in standard and R Evo variants, the motorcycle is scheduled for release in January 2024.
In terms of design, the 1390 Super Duke adopts a similar aesthetic to the recently launched 990 Duke. Notable features include vertically stacked LED headlights with hollow middle DRLs, winglets, and an enlarged 17.5-liter fuel tank. The motorcycle exudes the characteristic Duke appearance, ready to tackle both urban streets and occasional racetracks.
The standout feature lies in the enlarged engine, boasting a 1350cc displacement, a result of an increased stroke. The LC8 V-Twin engine generates an impressive 187.4bhp and 145Nm of torque, coupled with a 6-speed gearbox equipped with a slip and assist clutch. KTM introduces a “cam shift” system, or variable valve timing, in the new engine, enhancing power and torque distribution across the rev range. Positioned in the cylinder heads, this system facilitates valve opening at two different levels, resulting in a power increase of 10bhp compared to the previous 1290 Duke while adhering to the latest emission standards.
On the equipment front, the 1390 Super Duke R incorporates semi-active WP suspension, Brembo monoblock caliper disc brakes, 17-inch wheels fitted with Michelin Power GP tires, a TFT instrument console, and a keyless pillion seat removal option. In the realm of electronics, the motorcycle retains the advanced features of the 1290, including lean-sensitive ABS, traction control, wheelie control, slide control, and launch control, albeit with refinements. Riding modes and MotoGP-inspired Ride Height technology, which adjusts the rear shock preload when stationary, further enhance the bike”s electronic offerings.
