Royal Enfield is gearing up to introduce the much-anticipated Classic 650, with a launch expected either towards the end of this year or early next year. The Chennai-based manufacturer has been actively expanding its motorcycle lineup, focusing on the 350cc, 450cc, and 650cc segments. Among these, the Classic 650 Twin has garnered significant attention, especially given the enduring popularity of the Classic 350.
Confirmed Development and Design
Royal Enfield recently filed a trademark for the name “Classic 650 Twin,” confirming the development of this new model. This trademark filing turns the previous speculations into a concrete plan. The Classic 650 Twin will share its platform with Royal Enfield”s other 650cc models, including the Interceptor, Continental GT, Shotgun, and Super Meteor.
While the new model will borrow the basic underpinnings from its siblings, it is expected to feature modifications to its chassis, particularly the sub-frame, to suit its classic styling and riding dynamics. The design will mirror the iconic look of the Classic 350, complete with vintage charm, but will include dual peashooter exhausts. Depending on the variant, the Classic 650 will feature either chrome or blacked-out elements.
Features and Specifications
In terms of features, the Classic 650 Twin is likely to come with a mix of retro and modern elements. It is expected to sport the same analog instrument console with a small digital inset as seen on the Classic 350, and a USB charging port. There is also speculation that it might include an LED headlight setup, enhancing its modern appeal without straying from its classic roots.
The motorcycle will be equipped with conventional telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear, ensuring a balanced ride quality. Braking duties will be handled by disc brakes on both ends, coupled with dual-channel ABS for enhanced safety. The bike is expected to roll on 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, available in both alloy and wire-spoke variants.
Powertrain and Pricing
The Classic 650 Twin will be powered by a 648cc parallel-twin, oil-cooled engine, which delivers 47 bhp and 52 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be paired with a 6-speed gearbox and will feature a slip and assist clutch, promising smooth and responsive performance.
Given Royal Enfield’s strategy, the Classic 650 is expected to be the most affordable model in their 650cc lineup, positioned below the Interceptor. Consequently, the pricing is expected to be around Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom), making it an attractive option for enthusiasts seeking a blend of classic styling and modern performance in the mid-capacity segment.
